It’s crunch time! Mail-in ballots come out in 2 weeks to 50% of Bldr. Co. voters. Please volunteer some of your time to help get Barack Obama, Betsy Markey, Brandon Shaffer & other great democrats elected & good ballot measures passed! We are doing a huge all-Longmont canvass and need your help reaching almost 18,000 homes. Volunteers will be knocking on doors of Democrats & Unaffiliates to give them the “Boulder County Democrats Voter Education Guide.” This jewel is for voters to reference for information about where to vote, early voting locations, our GREAT candidates, and very importantly the 20+ ballot measures. As much as 60-70% of voters don’t complete their ballots because they don’t know about down ticket races &/or don’t have time to research 20+ ballot issues. Therefore, this Voter Guide is crucial. Your help with our person-to-person contact is the single most important thing you can do this election (besides vote!). It’s actually fun because people are so grateful to get this guide. At the end of your shift, you feel good - knowing you participated in grassroots democracy and embodied Obama’s empowerment message by giving people valuable information & encouraging them to fully exercise their democratic voting privilege! Again, we’re only going to “friendlies” so 99% of people contacted will be delighted to see a smiley, friendly, neighborhood volunteer giving them a helpful reference w/a 30 second message.

Below are the dates/shifts. Please let Shari Malloy know what days/shifts you want to help (smalloy@indra.com). We will be meeting at the Dems office at 360 Main Street to do a brief training and giving out materials so please be on time or a bit early if possible. Neighborhood maps, walking lists & a sample script will be provided along with the voter guides. Bring a friend or we will find you a partner (so we won’t be sending people alone). Because we’d prefer to have people walk in their precincts/neighborhoods, please look up & remember the last 3 digits of your precinct # when you come to canvas. Go to

Boulder Dems websit: http://www.bouldercountydems.org/ (look for the donkey)

Also, dress for weather, bring sunscreen/hats, extra water, a clipboard or folder, a canvass bag or something to hold the guide packets & dog treats (kinda fun if you like dogs).

p.s. If you already knew about this and have volunteered, you may be getting this because we don’t know what day/time or because I thought you might like to pass it on & do some recruiting of your own!!

Thanks for helping to turn Longmont a beautiful, solid BLUE! Also, keep in mind an election night watching returns party at our Boulder Co. Fairgrounds for people who have volunteered for the Dems (details coming on this)!

To: Mayor , Roger Lange
Mayor Pro-Tem, Karen Benker
Council Members: Brian Hansen, Sean McCoy, Mary Blue, Sarah Levison, Gabe Santos

Subject: Open Space acquisition

Mayor & City Council:

The below signed citizens are asking you, as our elected officials, to pursue the acquisition of open space land surrounding Longmont’s Union Reservoir. As open space, this land should be preserved by the City and County, not private developers, as our Eastern buffer ensuring that Longmont remain a free-standing city.

We are requesting that the City of Longmont acquire the undeveloped open space land between Hwy 119 to the Hartman property or WCR30 and County Line Road 1 to WCR7. Every effort should be made to preserve all the environmental benefits and qualities of the area including but not limited to:

∑ The enhancement of the ecosystem of the bald eagle, other raptors and migratory birds.
∑ The creation and preservation of wetlands
∑ The preservation and creation of an environmental system which encourages further use of the area by wildlife and other unique and native flora and fauna.
∑ Creating the potential for biological community farming to contribute to the self- sustainability for the City of Longmont and its citizens.

We encourage the City of Longmont to seek any and all sources of funding to leverage it’s own resources by actively pursuing funding from:

∑ GOCO for natural hiking trails & wildlife habitat
∑ Farm and ranchland monies for conservation easement purchases
∑ Funding for biological community farming,
∑ Partnering with Weld and/or Boulder County open space for matching funds

Purchasing open space as an Eastern city buffer has been part of Longmont’s long range plan at least as far back as the early 1990s. We encourage Longmont to return to that plan as a part of the quality of life for its present and future citizens.

Respectfully submitted,
