I consider Ralph Nader a great American, to me he ranks up there with Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez as great public activists. but his biggest mistake was getting into the business of national politics. National politics is a very pragmatic and me oriented business, politics became personal to him. Ralph Nader got away from the very thing he advocated, representing the consumer. He helped to some extend elect the Bush administration. his personal beliefs became more important than the interest of the public.

I have single-payer medical insurance. It’s called “original” Medicare, not a Medicare HMO, PPO, MA or any other of the systems invented to funnel Medicare patients away from the original.

I’m a lung-cancer survivor. I had a primary physician of my own choice as well as direct referrals to a pulmonologist, surgeon, oncologist, and radiation oncologist.

From the first suspicious x-ray to surgery to remove a portion of one lung took only two months. During that time I had a CT scan, a CT-guided needle biopsy, full pulmonary function test, and PET scan.

A single-payer system is not “socialized medicine.” The physicians I saw were all in private practice who had agreed to “Medicare assignment” — meaning they accept what Medicare determines as the allowable amount, irrespective of what they bill. Medicare pays 80% of the allowable amount, I paid the remaining 20%.

These physicians made their own determination of what tests and treatment I needed. None had to ask an insurance company or the government.

And on top of it all, original Medicare costs less per person than the other aberrations devised by the for-profit health insurance companies and their congressional acolytes.

Tell me, which system would you like to have for your healthcare needs?

While an extreem measure, the congress can refuse to submit an appropriation bill for executive branch operations and thereby shut down the government. The Texas legislature went “on vacation” rather than pass a redistricting plan, didn’t they?

I have no doubt that the tools that this president has collected unto himself would be passed on to he next president and be accepted intact by whoever wilns the election. This office s inherenly powerful, and as we know, power corupts even the most high minded. Look at Bush, he professes to be a Christian man. Did Jesus use his power to hide from his responsibility?

I think it’s crucial that we impeach as soon as possible - otherwise we might well see the spectacle of a President that *refuses* to leave office. Imagine how demoralizing it would be for America to have to watch a frothing/foaming/screaming George Bush frog-walked from the White House by Marines.

Think of it as an intervention.

Your members might be interested in joining the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (www.ncpssm.orgP. I’ve been a member since the early 1990s. They are on the front line opposing privatization of SS, Medicare Part B and Part D (unlike AARP). Dues is on $10/year. NCPSSM was formed by FDR’s grandson.
Their chairperson is a former congresswoman.

In all things there must be accountability. So why isn’t the Congress and Senate being held to some kind of a standard. Indiscriminate spending is NOT conservative, is NOT feasible, is NOT sustainable. Blood for oil is stupid when there are better technologies out there. Bush is the most ignorant American out there and those who support him are just as bad. Wake up America - we are becoming a nation of fools and being laughed at by the world.
